HOORAY FOR THE USA

We enjoyed lots of patriotic fun this week!  We learned about presidents, US symbols, and money!
The students are following directions to paint a bald eagle.

Adding numbers using a number line.

Monumental Measuring!
Directed drawings of 2 famous presidents.  Do you recognize them?

Found this cute idea from Step into Second Grade.

We made this cute Abraham Lincoln after reading Abe Lincoln's Hat and Just Like Abraham Lincoln.

The students added notes inside their Lincoln's hat.

I will practice karate everyday!
We learned about the Liberty Bell!

After reading several non-fiction stories about Washington and Lincoln the children read facts to complete the Venn diagram.
The students used the Venn diagram to complete this writing activity.

Some of our favorite books!

We played Collecting Coins!

We are feeling for coins with our feely fingers.

We are buying U.S. symbols.  Each child makes two patriotic symbol puzzles by buying the pieces using the money spinner.  It's not a good picture :(
My son, Alexander, visited the class on Friday.  In this picture he is showing the class where he has been so far and where he might go after completing his training.  He's using a laser pointer to point to maps hanging on my ceiling.

He's asking the students questions about what they have learned this week.  I found the perfect questions from Doodle Bugs Teaching.

We enjoyed these yummy Dr. Seuss cupcakes brought in by a mom to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday.  What a great beginning to next week's Seussical fun!

OUR TOOTH EXPERIMENT RESULTS

Here's what the egg shells looked like after sitting in the soda!

The students filled out tooth fairy applications!  I got this idea from blogland and tweaked it to fit my needs.

Brush Your Teeth!

Celebrating Dental Health Month!
Painting Mr. Big Mouth following the directions on the big screen.

Adding 20 teeth - 10 on the top and 10 on the bottom.  We are making Mr. Big Mouth talk, too.

Whoops!  Too many teeth!
Playing Mr. Big Mouth game!  Watch out for the cavity card!

We labeled a tooth.  Couldn't get it to rotate :(

We are observing what happens to the egg shell.  Unfortunately, the dentist who came to visit did this experiment as part of his presentation so we already know the results.  Oh, well...

We will write about our results when we return from our Mardi Gras break.

We ended the week eating apple smiles!  The recipe card can be found at Making Learning Fun.
FREEBIES!!!

SHARING THE LOVE

Here are some pictures from our LOTS OF LOVE PARTY.  What a lovely time!

After reading this book the students gave their guest a valentine.  I forgot to take a picture of the valentine, but it accompanies the book.  It was a rabbit made out of hearts.  It was adorable!
Making words from the word VALENTINES.

Decorating heart shaped cakes together.

Time to share the sweet treat with our guest!
Pocket chart to review number words and making addition number sentences.

This pocket chart introduces the students to using commas.

Sharing the love is not over in our class!  We will continue sending valentines to our friends in the classroom.  After everyone receives a valentine from all their classroom buddies, we will begin writing notes to each other.  The leader of the day distributes the notes.  This activity is great for handwriting practice, writing sentences, reading, and of course encourages being kind to one another.  I always begin this activity after Valentine's Day and it continues to the end of the school year.  It's a classroom favorite!

Here are some of the valentines we are sending to our friends.  These came from Making Learning Fun.  Sorry about the picture...still having trouble rotating pictures taken from my iphone.

Here are some of my students' writing responses to our LOTS OF LOVE party.  We brainstorm and list words we might use in our LOTS OF LOVE writing that can't be found using our resources (alphabet chart, vowel chart, sounds chart, word wall).  They did an awesome job!

Here's a freebie you can use for next year!
