February Quilt

Our quilt was created with student made love bugs and
painted ground hogs.

P.I.G. (Poetry Is Great) Book Additions

For this poem our focus letter was Jj.  Five Jj's were found so the student wrote by 5's to 100.

These letter poems can be found on
Kim Jordano's website.

The focus letter was Ee in this poem.  Nine were found.  The student drew three nests.  Each nest had three eggs.  How many eggs in all?
This is one of the songs were learned for Dental Health Week.  The children loved singing this song so much, I decided to add this poem to the P.I.G. books.  The students wrote about taking care of their teeth.

This is one of the pocket chart poems we read for valentines and added to our P.I.G. Books.

GBM Visits Italy

Here's a few things we learned.

We stamped our passports and made the flag of Italy.

Here's some books we read.

The GBM man sent us cups so we could try building a tower.  The children had fun finding out how tall they could build before the tower began to lean.

We made pizza!

1.  Use an English muffin for the crust.

2.  Spread tomato paste on the crust.

3.  Add some pepperoni.

4.  Sprinkle with cheese.

5.  Sprinkle Italian seasoning on top.

6.  Bake in the oven at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.

7.  Eat!   Delicious!!!

The Drama Center  is now The Pizza Place.

Here are the prices...pretty reasonable.

Here's the order form.

Here's where the chef makes the pizza.

Money, Money, Money

Even though the students have been working with money since day 1 of school during morning meeting, we begin our in depth unit on money with our Presidents and US Symbols unit.

The students collect a total of 10 coins for the piggy banks and then count how much is in each bank.

Coin Toss Game
The student predicts if heads or tails will win.  Toss and record the results.

PENNY COIN TOSS

NICKEL COIN TOSS

DIME COIN TOSS

QUARTER COIN TOSS

Spin a Nickel
When a student collects 5 pennies he can trade up for a nickel.  The first one to collect five nickels trades up for a quarter and wins the game!

Treasure Hunt
The student picks a card, finds the coordinates on the board and collects his treasure.  At the end of the game the children are encouraged to count how much money they collected.

Froggy Patterns and Growing Patterns

We made froggy patterns!

This is an ABBC pattern.

Here's an ABB pattern!

We are working on growing patterns.

We discovered while yellow is growing, red is shrinking. Amazing!!!

Presidents and US Symbols

George Washington's Hat
Start with a 9x12 piece of black construction paper.

Fold in thirds.

Cut on the fold lines to get 3 rectangles.

Staple to make a triangle.

Add some stars!

 Statue of Liberty

After reading about the Statue of Liberty the children wrote three facts from the bubble map we created.  I got this great idea from Deanna Jump.

This is our bubble map.

We made bald eagles using our hands and a foot.  Another cute idea from Deanna Jump!

The students wrote about what they  would do if they were President.

Here's a close up of the bald eagles.

I do this directed drawing activity of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln each year.
I just love the
personalities shown in the drawings.  Too cute!!!

We read some great stories about both of these Presidents and completed this venn diagram.

Here's all the students' drawings.

If I were President of the USA, I would...

This is always a fun writing activity!
